Form Submission Tracking with Google Tag Manager

Have you ever struggled to track form submissions for a Google Ads campaign? You’re not alone. Many marketers and business owners face the same issue when trying to monitor conversions on their websites. Without proper tracking, you may miss out on valuable insights and lead data.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to set up form submission tracking using Google Tag Manager, so you can stay on top of your leads and conversions. Let’s get started!

Open Google Tag Manager

Once inside, you’ll see a dashboard where all your tags, triggers, and variables will be managed. 

Create a New Tag

In your Google Tag Manager dashboard, click on the Tags section from the left menu, then select New. A new tag creation window will open. Name your tag something easy to recognize, like “Form Submission Tracking.”

Choose the Tag Type

Now, click on Tag Configuration and select Google Ads Conversion Tracking (or choose another tag type based on your needs).

Create a Trigger

Once your tag is set up, the next step is to create a trigger that will fire when a form submission is detected. Head over to the Triggers section on the left side of the dashboard and click New.

In the Trigger Configuration window, click on Choose a trigger type. Instead of selecting Form Submission, scroll down to the User Engagement section and choose Element Visibility (as shown in the image below).

This type of trigger allows you to track when a specific element (like a “Thank You” message or confirmation) becomes visible after a form is submitted. It’s a reliable way to ensure the submission was successful.

Send a Test Form Submission and Copy the Class

To proceed with tracking form submissions using the Element Visibility trigger, you need to identify the success message class. Here’s how:

  1. Fill out the form on your website and click Send.

  2. After submitting, you should see a confirmation message (e.g., “Submission successful”).

  3. Right-click on the confirmation message and choose Inspect from the menu.

  4. This will open the browser’s developer tools and highlight the HTML element containing the success message.

  5. Copy the class of the success message. In this example, the class is wpr-submit-success (as shown in the image below).

You’ll use this class in the next step to configure the trigger properly.

Select Element Visibility as the trigger type.

In the Selection Method dropdown, choose CSS Selector.

In the Element Selector field, paste the class wpr-submit-success, which you copied earlier from the success message.

The final step is to enable Observe DOM changes under the Advanced section to ensure the form submission success message is tracked even when the DOM updates after submission.

Once published, this trigger will fire when the element with the success message (identified by the CSS selector) appears, tracking the form submission as successful.
